The Balmain x H&M Disaster

Writing a moany post isn't really in my nature but I'm sorry I have to talk about this topic. Unless you've been living under a rock you'll be aware the Balmain x H&M collection came out on Thursday. Advertising for the collection begun months ago with celebrity models behind it such as Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Jourdan Dunn. The collection was only available in selected H&M stores so I knew if I wanted any pieces I'd have to queue up early. I woke up at 4am the day of the launch and while on my way to the Oxford Street store I see on Twitter that people had been camping there all night. My heart literally dropped but I was still determined to try and get something. Upon arrival the queue was snaked around the block and already crazy.
They were giving out different coloured wristbands to people with a set time to come back. So even though the store started letting people in at 9am the queue wasn't really moving. By 10:30am we are being told if you don't have a wristband you'll have to wait till midday. Still determined I waited. Then this is when things started to get kind of crazy. The queue was so out of control there was pushing and elbowing as well as people trying to push in. By this point I can see the door. Then out of nowhere people started pushing like crazy trying to cause a stampede. Security had to force the door shut while people outside were literally being crushed. The situation became so out of control that it was deemed a health and safety risk so they temporarily closed the store down. With the lights now off and people outside frustrated, tensions were rising.

Already earlier on there had been an incident in store allegedly that involved the police turning up. By now my feet are killing me and my bones were literally being crushed. Determined not to give up I waited. I'm pretty sure they had outsourced security but it was so poorly managed. Security weren't able to get everyone organised and kept telling people to take a step back. Don't think they could understand that people where being crushed. There was nowhere to step back. They let the crowd be for a good hour just repeating the same thing that the store won't open until the queue was organised. No help. Nothing. Then finally they got their act together and started organising people. By this point my body was killing and I just decided to leave. It wasn't worth it and I was so aggravated by the situation. Additionally the H&M staff were not helpful at all and provided minimum information that often contradicted what they had said earlier. It was very inconsiderate as people had been queuing since the early hours of the morning. The whole thing was a shambles but I'm still surprised as to why. H&M have done previous designer collaborations with the likes of Alexander Wang, Versace and Karl Largerfeld. You would have thought the whole thing would have been managed better because they've learnt from their mistakes in the past.

To be honest this post wasn't about ranting that H&M are rubbish, it was mainly to say that it's just clothes. People don't need to go crazy and start fighting/ pushing for clothes. If you've travelled or have been raised in a humble manner then you'll realise how shallow all of this really is. I've seen some people in poverty who are worried about where they will get water from and you're worried about causing a fight for some clothes? I'm not saying that fashion doesn't mean anything to me because it clearly does however on a larger scale of things it doesn't need to lead to poor behaviour. There were also some opportunistic people who had purchased in store and come outside to sell to those in the queue. The t-shirt for example which was available for £25 was being sold at an astonishing £90 right outside of the store. Various news outlets such as The Guardian, Independent and Telegraph have also reported how chaotic it was. Imagine the Regents Street store sold out within 40 minutes! The closest thing I got to the Balmain x H&M collaboration was a sample of this fragrance thats coming out on December 3rd, argh. If you managed to get any pieces or had a crazy experience feel free to share by commenting below.
